ICAO To FAA ATP License Conversion

Comprehensive FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certification for ICAO-licensed pilots seeking the highest level of U.S. pilot certification for global airline careers.

ICAO to FAA ATP License Conversion — Program Overview

Duration

14–21 Days (Post-verification)

Training Hours

45–55 Hours

This program is specifically designed for international pilots holding an ICAO-compliant Commercial Pilot License (CPL) or Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL). The ICAO to FAA ATP Conversion is a structured pathway to earn an unrestricted FAA Multi-Engine Land (AMEL) ATP certificate.

Unlike a simple validation, this process involves a mandatory certification program (ATP-CTP), a written knowledge test, and a practical flight evaluation (Check Ride) to ensure full alignment with 14 CFR Part 61 standards.

What This Conversion Program Includes

  • Letter of Authenticity (Verification): Guidance through the FAA Airmen Certification Branch (AFS-760) verification process.
  • ATP Certification Training Program (ATP-CTP): The mandatory 40-hour bridge course for multi-engine ATP applicants.
  • FAA Knowledge Test Preparation: Targeted study for the ATP Multi-Engine (ATM) written exam.
  • Advanced Simulation: High-altitude aerodynamics, upset recovery (UPRT), and air carrier operations training.
  • ATP Flight Proficiency: Intensive flight or simulator training focused on FAA ATP Practical Test Standards (PTS) or Airman Certification Standards (ACS).
  • FAA Practical Exam (Check Ride): Final evaluation with an FAA-Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE).
FAA validation, procedural alignment, and global operational eligibility

What This Program Prepares You For

Unrestricted FAA ATP Certification

Earn the "Gold Standard" of pilot certificates, allowing you to act as Pilot-In-Command (PIC) for U.S. air carriers (Part 121/135) and global operators.

ATP-CTP Compliance

Complete the mandatory FAA-approved training in aerodynamics, meteorology, and air carrier SOPs required before taking the written exam.

FAA Multi-Engine Command

Master multi-engine turbine operations, including advanced automation management and engine-out procedures under FAA-style evaluation.

Global Career Mobility

Transition your ICAO experience into a globally recognized FAA credential, opening doors to major airlines and international contract positions.

ICAO to FAA ATP Conversion Structure

This conversion follows a strict FAA-regulated sequence designed to transition experienced ICAO pilots into the U.S. National Airspace System. The pathway is divided into four critical milestones, moving from theoretical foundations to the final practical evaluation.

01

ATP-CTP (Certification Training Program)

Duration: 6–7 Days

Format: 30 Hours Ground / 10 Hours Simulator (Level C/D)

Before you can sit for the FAA written exam, you must complete the mandatory ATP-CTP. This course bridges the gap between commercial flying and the demanding environment of air carrier operations. It focuses on high-altitude aerodynamics, adverse weather phenomena, and professional air carrier SOPs.

This Phase Includes:

02

FAA Knowledge Test (ATM)

Focus: Regulatory and Technical Mastery

Requirement: 125-Question Computer-Based Exam

Following the ATP-CTP, you will complete the ATP Multi-Engine (ATM) written exam. This test validates your understanding of 14 CFR Part 121 regulations, performance calculations, and advanced navigation.

03

ATP Flight Training & Proficiency

Focus: Practical Standards Alignment

Format: Multi-Engine Aircraft or Level D Simulator

This phase is where your ICAO experience is refined to meet FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Airman Certification Standards (ACS). We focus on the “FAA way” of executing maneuvers, briefings, and cockpit management.

This Phase Includes:

04

FAA Practical Test (Check Ride)

Focus: The Final Evaluation

Duration: 4–6 Hours

The final step is the FAA Practical Test conducted by a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE). This is a comprehensive evaluation of your aeronautical knowledge and flight proficiency.

Outcome: Immediate issuance of your FAA Airline Transport Pilot Certificate.

Training Flow

A streamlined, four-stage pathway designed to transition experienced ICAO-licensed pilots to the FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) standard with efficiency and precision.

01

FAA Verification & ATP-CTP

Focus: Regulatory clearance and foundational turbine transition.

Outcome: Eligibility to sit for the FAA ATP Multi-Engine (ATM) knowledge test.

02

Knowledge Test & FAA Theory

Focus: Mastering the FAA written evaluation.

Outcome: Official FAA Knowledge Test Report (Valid for 60 calendar months).

03

ATP Flight Proficiency & SOP Alignment

Focus: Practical maneuvers and cockpit discipline.

Outcome: Final endorsement for the FAA ATP Practical Test.

04

FAA Practical Examination (Check Ride)

Focus: The Gold Standard evaluation.

Outcome: Full FAA ATP certification and global operational eligibility.

Minimum Requirements:

Eligibility for ICAO to FAA ATP License Conversion

This program, offered by Simulator Center Training, is tailored for experienced international pilots who meet the FAA’s aeronautical experience standards and hold a valid ICAO-compliant license. Unlike the A320 conversion, this pathway requires a formal Verification of Authenticity before training with Simulator Center Training can begin.

01

Verification of Authenticity (Letter of Authenticity)

Before arriving in the U.S., you must verify your foreign license with the FAA.

  • Process: Submit a request to the FAA Airmen Certification Branch (AFS-760).
  • Timeline: This process typically takes 45–90 days. You cannot take the FAA Knowledge Test or the Practical Test without a valid Letter of Authenticity.
  • Validity: Your ICAO license and medical must remain valid throughout the entire conversion process.
02

Aeronautical Experience Requirements

Applicants must meet the flight time requirements under 14 CFR § 61.159 for an unrestricted ATP:

  • Total Flight Time: 1,500 hours
  • Cross-Country: 500 hours
  • Night Flight: 100 hours
  • Instrument: 75 hours (Actual or Simulated)
  • Multi-Engine: 50 hours
  • PIC Time: 250 hours (or specific SIC credit as per FAA regulations)
03

Valid ICAO Pilot License

You must hold a valid and current pilot license issued by an ICAO member state (e.g., DGCA, EASA, CAA, TCCA):

  • Commercial Pilot License (CPL) with multi-engine and instrument ratings, OR
  • Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL).
04

FAA Medical Certification

  • Requirement: A valid FAA First Class Medical Certificate.
  • Note: While a foreign medical is sufficient for the Letter of Authenticity, an FAA medical is required to take the Practical Test and exercise ATP privileges. We recommend obtaining this early in the process.
05

English Language Proficiency

  • Standard: Minimum ICAO Level 4 or higher.
  • Requirement: You must be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language to meet FAA certification standards and clear the oral examination.
06

Identification & TSA Clearance

  • Passport: A valid, unexpired passport.
  • TSA (AFSP): Non-U.S. citizens must obtain TSA Flight Training Provider Program clearance before beginning simulator or flight training.
